_ living islam : Islamic tradition _ https://www.livingislam.org/ Bio of Imam al-Tirmidhi In his Sunan, book of al-Hajj `an Rasulillah, chapter entitled Ma ja'a fi Hajj al-Sabi, Imam al-Tirmidhi mentions the hadith of Jabir that when they performed pilgrimage with the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, they used to raise talbiya on behalf of the women and cast their pebbles on behalf of the small boys. Then al- Tirmidhi says: "The people of learning have reached consensus that none raises talbiya on behalf of a woman, rather, she herself raises it on her own behalf; and it is abominable for her to raise her voice therewith." Then the opening line of the last book of his Sunan, book of `Ilal: "Everything I mention in this book (the Sunan) is put into practice... except two hadiths..." Then he cites the hadith of jam` between prayers without excuse and the killing of the 4th-time drunk recidivist. Ibn Rajab says he should have said three in light of the talbiya hadith. I seem to remember that there is one more such narration; but three suffice to invalidate the claim that everything therein is put into practice since the Imam himself said and showed otherwise. By the same token, of course, the fact illustrates the greatness of his book. Another false claim is that the Sunan contains no forgery. It is generally agreed upon that it does, wAllahu a`lam. gibril 2008-06-18
