A Note On Group Dhikr

Imam Suyuti in his fatwa on group dhikr quotes Imam Ahmad, 
who says, "there are people who claim that ibn Mas'ud used to forbid 
circles of dhikr; but by Allah, never did Ibn Mas'ud sit in a 
gathering without him invoking Allah in it." Meaning in other words, 
that it was not in the spirit or habit of Ibn Mas'ud 
radiyallahu 'anhu to do such. 

We should have absolutely full yaqin in the recommended-ness and 
legitimacy of group dhikr circles, and in the licitness of using the 
tasbih. And anytime someone is trying to convince us of avoiding 
dhikr and its people, our radar against the shaytan should go up
