Q: Could someone please clarify if there are fabricated narrations attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in Dala'il al- Khayrat? A: There are a few narrations for which no transmission chains or documentation could be found in the chapter entitled "The immense merit of invoking blessings on the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace," at the beginning of the Dala'il. But note the beginning of the chapter in question in Dala'il al- Khayrat which the author opened, after mention of the noble Qur'anic verse of salawat, with the passive-anonymous formula of tamrid: "WA YURWA ANNA RASULALLAH..." i.e. "And it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah..." Every single hadith that follows is in conjunction with this initial formula; which is the required etiquette of quoting hadiths of other than established authenticity. Any subsequent mention of the phrase "the Prophet said" in that chapter is governed by the implication of its opening, thus sparing the reader any misgivings. As for seeking permission to read the Dala'il, it is not based on a need for "intimate secrecy" or any abstruse concern. Rather, the number of nusakh for Dala'il al-Khayrat is high and there were many authorial remaniements that went into the world before the final version. Hence, ascertaining that one is reading the right text - known as the Sahliyya - is without doubt the best way to go. Among other reasons for seeking permission to read beforehand are (i) for the increase of baraka - not that baraka is absent if there is no permission; (ii) for the propitiation of ease, as "the sign of permission is ease"; (iii) to learn the proper modality of reading, etc. Read the magnificent introduction of Shaykh Yusuf al-Nabhani to his glossarial edition entitled al-Dalaalaat al-Waadihaat. He spent the effort of seeking permission from, and reading the Dala'il with many a "Shaykh al-Dala'il." As Imam al-Lacknawi said: Each art is taken specifically from its masters. WAllahu a`lam.
