{ أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا }
{Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Or are there locks upon their hearts?}
47-24
{ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ بِهَا }
{They have hearts but they're not able to understand with}

1. The Mind - Heart Connection
In the Islamic tradition, both the mind and the heart hold important yet separate roles.
The Islamic view or epistemology differs from the Western materialistic, one-dimensional understanding:
The mind is responsible for reasoning, understanding, and processing information. However, the essential element is the intellect (`aql), which is a light from the Divine[1][1], and while it involves the mind, it especially employs the heart (qalb)
The heart (qalb) is the spiritual centre of man and woman, encompassing righteousness, sincerity, and, of course, emotions. It receives divine realities through the intellect (`aql), depending on its level of purification.
Good, even wise decisions are those which align with the prophetic way ﷺ, and the aim is to attain Allah's good pleasure (ridwan) in this life and the next.
2. The Heart
The heart is man’s innermost reality, the centre of consciousness.
The heart is not merely the organ of emotions, “feelings” and desires, but also includes the soul, knowledge, bravery, and more. When purified, it becomes the seat of the intellect, that is, the ray of the Divine within man and woman. [2]
3. Heart-Mind Relationship - Recent Scientific Findings
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf refers to some of the most recent findings of modern science regarding the heart and mind:[3]
- "The nervous system does not initiate the heartbeat; it is self-initiated, or as we would say, initiated by Allah (may His Majesty be exalted!), and that
- "The heart itself has its own type of intelligence."[10] [11]
4. Interplay Between Mind and Heart
There is an interplay between the mind and heart, where genuine understanding occurs when the heart's spiritual insight leads the mind. This understanding relies on the individual's level of taqwa[4], which in turn depends on the focus and effort invested in purifying the heart. [5]
The Quran emphasises the significance of both faculties, encouraging reflection and contemplation {a fala tatafakkaruun}[6] while also emphasising the need of a pure and guided heart:[7]
{يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ }
{إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ}
{The Day when neither wealth will be of any use (to anyone) nor sons, except to one who will come to Allah with a sound heart…}
○ However, it can be argued that the line between the categories of mind and heart is not always clearly understood. The interaction of mind and heart is a complex process related to human consciousness, and our knowledge remains limited.
○ The main point should be not to overestimate the capabilities of our mind and not to diminish the fundamental importance of our (spiritual) heart. 26-88/89[8]
5. On the Mind and Heart, a Hypothetical Case Study
The mind is the faculty of thought.
The heart is the faculty of valuing and deciding. That is why we call it the intellect. (`aql).
A typical hypothetical case without any ’bodily signals’, such as pain or hunger.
Person NN in our example is about to spend money on something.
In his mind, he is weighing these two basic alternatives; his mind presents him with the pros and cons, which at this point appear to be equal.
Either
- spending money on some stuff, like entertainment, consumer goods
or
- spending money on a certain charity
Intuitively, his heart is now involved in what choice to make.
At this stage, it is NN’s heart that acts by the light of the intellect (`aql), and it will make its decision while being in tune with Allah (may His Majesty be exalted!). Therefore, if NN follows his heart, he will succeed, and all success is from Allah! و من الله التوفيق
The choice is not for the comfort of this fleeting world (dunya), but for Allah (may His Majesty be exalted!) and His Prophet ﷺ and the World to Come (al-akhira).
6. A Warning Against Over-Categorization
7. With a Blind Heart, the Mind Is Dysfunctional
{ أَفَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَتَكُونَ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ يَعْقِلُونَ بِهَا أَوْ آذَانٌ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَا تَعْمَى الْأَبْصَارُ وَلَٰكِن تَعْمَى الْقُلُوبُ الَّتِي فِي الصُّدُورِ }
{Have they, then, never journeyed about the earth, letting their hearts gain wisdom, and causing their ears to hear? Yet, verily, it is not their eyes that have become blind - but blind have become the hearts that are in their breasts.} 22-46
This means, according to the Tafsīr by Ibn Kathīr, the blind person is not the one whose eyes cannot see, but rather the one who has no insight. Even if the physical eyes are sound, they still cannot learn the lesson.
8. Complementary Faculties: Mind and Heart
To conclude, the mind and heart are not opposing forces but rather complementary faculties, with both working in harmony. The heart serves as a spiritual compass for truth and righteousness, guiding the mind and body.
○ However, to fulfil this role, the heart must be constantly purified (tazkiyah al-qalb) through remembrance of God (dhikr), repentance (tawba), and seeking knowledge. [7]
{ قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا ، وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا }
{Successful indeed is the one who purifies their soul, and doomed is the one who corrupts it!} 91-9/10
9. On Piety and Purification of the Heart
A reminder
Hadith of Prophet Muhammad on piety, purification and God-awareness
( ﷺ may Allah's blessings & peace be upon him)
O Allah, grant my soul taqwā (piety) and purify it, for You are the Best of those who can purify it. You are its Protector and Master. O Allah, I seek Your protection from knowledge which does not benefit, a heart which does not submit, a soul which is not satisfied and a supplication which is not accepted.
