Hamas said Isral has violated the ceasefire by occupying 33 square kilometers beyond the agreed withdrawal zone. In a new statement today, the movement detailed that Isralic forces have established fortified firing positions 400–1,050 meters inside the Yellow Line, moved military vehicles into those areas, and placed concrete barriers extending 200–800 meters past the agreed temporary boundary.

Isralic forces killed two Palestinians near the Yellow Line in southern Gaza earlier today, claiming without evidence that they had crossed the line and posed an “immediate threat” to soldiers. Al Jazeera reported that one of those killed was a child.

The Isralic army said it “eliminated two terrorists” near the yellow line who “posed an immediate threat” to its troops in southern Gaza.

The search for Gaza’s missing
Over 11,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have disappeared since Oct. 7. Relatives don’t know if they’re dead or alive, under rubble or in prison.

On the morning of Sept. 28 last year, 67-year-old Abdulaziz Jouda and his friend Jabr Musleh set out to harvest olives from a grove north of Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The area, near the Netzarim Corridor occupied at the time by the Isralic army, had been designated a red, or “danger,” zone, but the men were determined to gather the season’s produce.

Jouda’s daughter, 31-year-old Ola, told +972 Magazine that a local journalist, Ahmed Allouh — who would be killed three months later by an Isralic airstrike — saw the two men that morning, and later heard two tank shells being fired in the direction of the grove. Continued shelling in the area meant that he was unable to check on them.

By evening, neither Jouda nor Musleh had returned home and they were not answering their phones. Their families began to fear the worst.

When the shelling subsided the next morning, the two men’s relatives rushed to the grove. They found Musleh’s body, along with Jouda’s bicycle, phone, and personal belongings — but no second body.

Under renewed fire, the families fled. When they returned a month later, they found nothing. They tried once more during the ceasefire in March of this year, only to discover that the grove had been bulldozed by the Isralic army.

Jouda’s family contacted human rights groups, which in turn approached the Isralic military to determine whether he had been detained. His name did not appear on any such list.

Jouda is one of more than 11,000 Palestinians reported missing in Gaza, according to the UN — most of whom, it says, are women and children. These individuals may be trapped under the rubble, detained in Isralic prisons, or disappeared under other circumstances. Many of those in the first category are thought to be located in parts of the Strip that remain under Isralic military control, making it impossible to recover their bodies.

The Palestinian Center for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared, a local initiative established earlier this year, is attempting to coordinate search efforts between human rights groups and the relevant authorities in Gaza.

Isralic soldiers speak out on killings of Gaza civilians

Isralic soldiers have described a free-for-all in Gaza and a breakdown in norms and legal constraints, with civilians killed at the whim of individual officers, according to testimony in a TV documentary.

“If you want to shoot without restraint, you can,” Daniel, the commander of an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tank unit, says in Breaking Ranks: Inside Israel’s War, due to be broadcast in the UK on ITV on Monday evening.

Some of the IDF soldiers who talked to the programme requested anonymity while others spoke on the record. All pointed to the evaporation of the official code of conduct concerning civilians.

“In basic training for the army, we all chanted ‘means, intent and ability’,” Capt Yotam Vilk, an armoured corps officer, says in reference to the official IDF training guidelines stipulating that a soldier can fire only if the target has the means, shows intent and has the ability to cause harm.

“There’s no such thing as ‘means, intent and ability’ in Gaza,” Vilk says. “No soldier ever mentions ‘means, intent, and ability’. It’s just: a suspicion of walking where it’s not allowed. A man aged between 20 and 40.”

Another soldier, identified in the programme only as Eli, says: “Life and death isn’t determined by procedures or opening fire regulations. It’s the conscience of the commander on the ground that decides.”

In those circumstances, the designation of who is an enemy or terrorist becomes arbitrary, Eli says in the documentary. “If they’re walking too fast, they’re suspicious. If they’re walking too slow, they’re suspicious. They’re plotting something. If three men are walking and one of them lags behind, it’s a two-to-one infantry formation – it’s a military formation,” he says.

Eli describes an incident in which a senior officer ordered a tank to demolish a building in an area designated as safe for civilians. “A man was standing on the roof, hanging laundry, and the officer decided that he was a spotter. He’s not a spotter. He’s hanging his laundry. You can see that he’s hanging laundry,” he says.

“Now, it’s not as if this man had binoculars or weapons. The closest military force was 600-700 metres away. So unless he had eagle eyes, how could he possibly be a spotter? And the tank fired a shell. The building half collapsed. And the result was many dead and wounded.”

Guardian analysis in August of the IDF’s intelligence data showed that by the reckoning of Isralic military officials [ □ comment: we have seen during the past decades that their reckoning is never according to the truth.] , 83% of those killed in Gaza were civilians [ □ comment: this number of 83% is probably much higher.], a historic high for modern conflicts, though the IDF disputed the analysis. More than 69,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war started and more continue to die despite a ceasefire that began a month ago.

In a written statement, the IDF said: “The IDF remains committed to the rule of law and continues to operate in accordance with its legal and ethical obligations, despite the unprecedented operational complexity posed by Hamas’s systematic embedding within civilian infrastructure and its use of civilian sites for military purposes.”

Some of the soldiers interviewed in the Breaking Ranks programme said they were influenced by the language of Isralic politicians and religious leaders suggesting that after the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 Isralics and foreign nationals were killed, every Palestinian was a legitimate target.

Claims of Systematic Sexual Violence on 7 Oct Unverified

A new Isralic report alleging that Hamas used sexual violence as a “weapon of war” during the 7 October attacks is facing renewed scrutiny after a senior United Nations official said there is no independent evidence for the Isralic claim.

“It is my understanding that neither the [UN] Commission nor any other independent human rights mechanism established that sexual or gender-based violence was committed against Isralics on or since the 7 October as a systematic tool of war or as a tool of genocide,” said Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, in a statement.

Alsalem’s remarks came in response to the publication of “A Quest for Justice,” a new report authored by Isralic legal and gender experts under the Dinah Project, which claims that sexual violence was a coordinated tactic used by Hamas during its 7 October incursion into southern Israel.

The authors say they gathered evidence from at least 17 incidents of sexual assault, including cases involving rape, mutilation, forced nudity, and alleged sexual abuse of hostages during captivity in Gaza. It also claims male hostages experienced “sexual humiliation” and calls on the UN to designate Hamas as an organisation that systematically employs sexual violence in warfare.

However, international experts have cautioned against accepting such claims without independent verification. Alsalem noted that although the UN Commission of Inquiry had “found patterns indicative of sexual violence against Isralic women at different locations,” it was “unable to independently verify specific allegations… due to Israel’s obstruction of its investigations.”

Hamas has denied committing any sexual crimes during the attack, which left over 1,200 Isralics dead. However, a significant number of those fatalities are believed to have resulted from Israel’s use of the so-called “Hannibal Directive”—a controversial military protocol [by the IOF^[5]] designed to prevent the capture of Isralic soldiers or civilians, even at the cost of their lives. During the 7 October attack, the directive was reportedly invoked in multiple locations, including at the Nova music festival and several military outposts, where Isralic forces fired heavy weaponry at sites where hostages were being held or had sought refuge.”

In March, the UN Human Rights Council released a separate report documenting Israel’s “systematic use of sexual, reproductive and other gender-based violence” since its assault on Gaza began. Titled “More than a human can bear,” the report concluded that Israel’s attacks have disproportionately targeted women and children, and that the destruction of healthcare and civilian infrastructure has inflicted severe gender-based harm on the population.

Since 7 October, Isral’s military assault on Gaza has killed more than 57,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to Gaza health officials. UN agencies and human rights experts have repeatedly accused Israel of targeting civilians and of possible war crimes, including the use of starvation as a weapon.

For nearly three weeks, we have heard by-the-minute news about the retrieval of Isralic bodies in Gaza. International rescue teams have been sent into Gaza, not to help retrieve the more than 10,000 bodies (a conservative figure) of Palestinians – including babies, children, the elderly – but to retrieve the remains of last Isralics, whom, it is known, including by Isralics, are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to retrieve because they are trapped beneath rubble due to two years of non-stop Isralic bombardment.

Meanwhile, the population of Gaza remains starved, collectively punished, until the last of the Isralic bodies is retrieved and confirmed. But while we see New York Times “breaking news” alerts on Isralic bodies, little attention has been paid to obvious signs of torture that Palestinians held by Israel endured before being returned to Gaza for burial, or to the sheer number of Palestinian bodies held by Israel.

Under the so-called “ceasefire agreement,” for every dead Isralic handed over to Israel, Israel would, in turn, return the remains of 15 Palestinians. To date, Israel has returned some 300 Palestinians, but without providing the names of the deceased. Due to Israel’s bombing of the forensic labs, all of the identification is being done by hand, a laborious job. Israel had, of course, failed to place the bodies in refrigerators, so the bodies arrived decomposed. And also mutilated. As Palestinian bodies are brought to Gaza, their family members wait to find out whether their loved ones are among the dead, trapped under the rubble, or still held hostage in Israel.
