I’m not surprised by the world’s bias and racism and its obsession with the bodies of 14 Israelis still under the rubble in Gaza, while ignoring the thousands of Palestinian bodies buried beneath the same ruins. Nor is it shocking that the media give disproportionate attention to the recovery of a single Israeli body, while over 150 Palestinian bodies returned to Gaza are unidentified, unclaimed, and unrecognized, deprived even of the dignity of a name.

What is shocking, however, is Israel’s insistence on not hiding its crime. The bodies returned bear undeniable testimony: blindfolded eyes, severed limbs, ropes around necks, cotton stuffed where organs once were. The scale of torture is so grotesque, so obscene, that no international investigation is needed to validate it.

I find myself wondering: what level of tyranny must Israel have reached to carry out such horrors and not even attempt – despite its ability – to conceal the evidence? What kind of moral depravity allows a state that claims to be “the only democracy in the Middle East” to commit these acts openly, unashamedly, while the world watches and listens?

And yet, I hold onto an idea that echoes in my mind: when a regime reaches the peak of its cruelty, it begins its descent. Some may see us as too weak to bring down such a rogue apartheid system, but that system, without doubt, has become far too brutal to endure.
